TIME: 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Description
This recently completed ‘houseplex’ development was initiated ahead of recent local and national policies to address the housing crisis, through supports for low-rise Toronto yellow-belt infill. The presentation by the architect and developer will focus holistically on both design, development and construction strategies used to mitigate cost and the emerging and conflicting approvals processes, while maintaining the project ambitions for beautiful, humane, high calibre Passive House housing.
Learning Objectives
- How to maximize site potential for urban infill
- How to negotiate a changing landscape of approval processes
- How to design for health, beauty, daylight, and view within limited space
- How to design for resilience and Passive House equivalence, within economic constraints
Presenters:
Cheryl Atkinson, Principal, Atkinson Architect, and Associate Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University
Cheryl is an Associate Chair and professor in Architecture at TMU and principal of Atkinson Architect in Toronto. Her teaching, research and design have focused on missing middle housing development and design strategies, with emphasis on its capacity to shape more beautiful, social, and environmentally sustainable housing and cities. This work includes a focus on reclaiming and adaptive re-use of underutilized land and buildings, and strategies to improve performance and cost through pre-fabrication and circularity. She has researched and published extensively on the impact of the sensorial qualities of architectural design with respect to daylight, views, proximity, and scale on human experience and well-being with the largest pre and post occupancy analysis of health environments of its kind in Canada (Bridgepoint Health, Toronto) with a team of social psychologists and funded by a Canadian Institute of Health and Research grant.
She designed and fabricated with the Endeavour Centre and their students, the off-grid pre-fab Zero House for the EDITDX exhibition in 2017. Her 18 years as a design lead at Teeple architects contributed to many buildings winning OAA and Governor General’s Awards including libraries, community centres, childcares, and academic buildings. She has practiced independently since joining TMU.
Rolf Paloheimo, President, P&R Developments Inc., Creative Communities Inc.
Rolf has an extensive career in sustainable housing research, development, construction, and system innovations. Together with architect Martin Leifhebber in 1996 they produced the ‘Toronto Healthy House,’ an urban, off grid (no municipal water, sewage or power) demonstration home for CMHC where Paloheimo lived with his family for 20 years. He has developed integrated PV and renewable energy projects and has patents for water reclamation technology. He has been an advisor to the Federal Green Municipal Funds and Sustainable Development Technology Canada. He is currently developing “missing middle” housing in Toronto.
