Learn about the realities of historic brick reclamation in Toronto through the case study of the 2025 partial deconstruction of the Danforth Baptist Church in Toronto: the challenges of saving tonnes of rare heritage brick on a tight schedule and budget, the value potential in the salvaged material, and how it fits into the bigger picture of the Circular Economy. Daniel Arellano, CAHP is a heritage mason by trade and history & architecture enthusiast by study, working to preserve the value of historic buildings and materials throughout Ontario through restoration work and masonry material salvage. Driven by Circular Economy principles, he launched Arcana Materials to divert valuable brick and stone from landfills while meeting a growing demand for reclaimed materials, and has become an expert on material reuse with unique perspective on deconstruction viability and product development.
