Consultation: Supporting Development in the City of Brampton’s Downtown Special Policy Area

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing has posted a notice on the Regulatory Registry to propose administrative changes to the Building Code that could streamline planning approvals and would allow development projects to proceed more quickly in the City of Brampton's Downtown Special Policy Area.

Following approval of an official plan amendment, land use planning approvals and construction could proceed on delineated sites in the City of Brampton Downtown Special Policy Area at the same time as construction of the planned Riverwalk flood protection infrastructure is underway. To protect public health and safety, the proposed Building Code amendment would prevent the occupancy of new permanent buildings on the Centre for Innovation and Heritage Theatre and Southern Blocks sites until the flood protection infrastructure is complete and the associated flood risk is removed.

The proposal is available on the Regulatory Registry www.regulatoryregistry.gov.on.ca/proposal/53133 for comment until February 2, 2026 (20 days). If you have questions or require more information on this consultation please contact buildingcode.consultation@ontario.ca.
